DEZ ANOS DEPOIS…
… o q ficou?
… o q ficou?
“In its original guise, as a 1996 demo called ‘Relinquished Body’, this was the first song I wrote after Celtic Frost‘s original split in 1993, when I wasn’t part of any band. It has always been a typical Celtic Frost song in my eyes, which is the reason it was long left without a proper release – it had nothing in common at all with music we subsequently created with the industrial Apollyon Sun project. When Celtic Frost regrouped many years later, I submited this song for inclusion on the ‘Monotheist’ album. We played it during rehearsals, but it was ultimately rejected, not least due to its grand piano section.
I had written the original lyrics in a state of reflection, despondency, and disappointment due to the loss of the creative and personal bond with my closest friend and songwritting partner of so many years in Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. Alas, history seems bound to repeat itself“.
“Many years ago, I first saw the drastic images that comprise the series Les Miséres et les Malheurs de la Guerre, by French artist Jacques Callot (1592 – 1635). It was perhaps inevitable that certain scenes from the series would remain etched into my mind. Not least because they detail, in a peculiar directness somewhat typical for the period, some of the atrocious propensities of the human race.
A more recente and completely unexpected exposure to one of Callot’s images eventually led to the title Tree Of Suffocating Souls and the potential content for a song’s lyrics. It seemed obvious what kind of music I needed to create to match such a topic.
Tree Of Suffocating Souls subsequently was one of the last songs I brought into the sessions for Melana Chasmata in 2013. It represents a renewed embodiment of a topic visited since the days when I was a member of Hellhammer and manifested in songs such as Hellhammer‘s Massacra, Celtic Frost‘s Progeny or Triptykon‘s Goetia”.
