ENCARTE: TRIPTYKON

Many years ago, I first saw the drastic images that comprise the series Les Miséres et les Malheurs de la Guerre, by French artist Jacques Callot (1592 – 1635). It was perhaps inevitable that certain scenes from the series would remain etched into my mind. Not least because they detail, in a peculiar directness somewhat typical for the period, some of the atrocious propensities of the human race.

A more recente and completely unexpected exposure to one of Callot’s images eventually led to the title Tree Of Suffocating Souls and the potential content for a song’s lyrics. It seemed obvious what kind of music I needed to create to match such a topic.

Tree Of Suffocating Souls subsequently was one of the last songs I brought into the sessions for Melana Chasmata in 2013. It represents a renewed embodiment of a topic visited since the days when I was a member of Hellhammer and manifested in songs such as Hellhammer‘s Massacra, Celtic Frost‘s Progeny or Triptykon‘s Goetia”.
