“First of all this is NOT new Amorphis studio-album. If you are not familiar with our old works you might freak out. If you are a fan of our old material you might freak out as well.
This year is 20th anniversary year for Amorphis. The idea of compilation release came out end of last year when we did our DVD recordings. We didn’t want to put out just a regular compilation album and take few songs from there and there. The idea of re-recording was more interesting to us and I’m sure for fans as well.
Magic And Mayhem includes songs from three first Amorphis albuns; Karelian Isthmus, Tales From the Thousand Lakes and Elegy. We wanted to concentrate these three albuns mainly because of they represent our 1st era of the band and we’ve been playing live a lot of these ‘old’ tracks with Tomi Joutsen. His voice makes perfect match for the early stuff and we really wanted to hear how these tracks would sound as updated versions. Also Niclas and Santeri brought lots of fresh ideas to these tracks.
The songs on this álbum are not made to replace any of the original album versions. The sound-world of our three first album is far too organic to even try to copy that. Magic And Mayhem presentes Amorphis-sound at 2010. It has slightly different arrangements but still catches the original mood and brutality. It was funny to realize that when you listen this re-recording compilation through all the songs make perfect match between each other, musically and soundwise.
The cover artwork is done by Kristian Whalin who came out with the original Elegy artwork. Magic And Mayhem cover shows great pike-fish which describes extremely well the world of Kalevala and what Amorphis wanted to represent with this álbum. Majestic, skull-pummeling death metal as we were once promoted…
Enjoy our brothers and sisters, Esa Holopainen/Amorphis“
