“The story of…

Looking back at the time when Old Funeral was around makes me think about the most interesting times of me life. The idea to form a band a bit out of the ordinary came up in spring of 1998. We were three hyper active snot nose kids wanting to thrash! The guys were Tore, Padden and Olve, we got hold of the instruments and started playing covers of Celtic Frost, Sodom and The Mentors. After intensive rehearsing we had our firts demo recorded on a 4 track in the spring of 1989. It sold 50 copies… It contained 6 self made tracks. Before this demo also Demonaz from later Amputation and Immortal had played in the band as a second guitarplayer for 2 – 3 months although none of this material was used as he quit to start Amputation.

We continued as a three piece band also ‘til the next demo “Abduction of limbs”. This was the first metal recording in Grieghallen with Pytten as producer. It was recorded in March 1990. The demo was very well received and sold 750 copies. We did some gigs and we found out that it would complete the band if we got hold of a second guitarist.

Eventually we ran into this guy who called himself C. Vikernes. It turned out that he was into extreme metal and was a very fast learner. A couple of reheasals and he could play our songs. Also very fast he contributed with his own ideas, and our music took a more ‘death metal’ turn with more serious lyrics. After a while we had ready three songs, which was again recorded in Grieghallen and released on a vinyl 7″ though Thrash Records in May 1991 called “Devoured Carcass”. Shortly ahead of the recording Olve had left the band to form Immortal together with Demonaz, and changed his name to Abbath. But this was no obstacle as Padden took care of the vocals and we recruited a new bass player called Thorlak.

After a while and a couple of gigs Vikernes didn’t feel confortable with Old Funeral anymore, so he formed his own man band Burzum, and you know the rest of the story…

But we couldn’t stop playing so we got hold of Jørn, who is now playing in Hades Almighty. A couple of new song were made and we entred a 8 track studio called Kardemommehuset, and recorded a full lenght album. Sadly the band split up due to various reasons meant to stay underground. But the raw mix is still there, and some tracks are exhumed for your pleasure.

Old Funeral palyed their last gig in Joensuu, Finland on the 8th of February 1992, and split up a month later.

Hammerheart Records released the “Abduction of limbs” demo and the 7″ on a limited edition 12″ picture disc in October 1998, but now those and the rest (well, almost…) is released on cd/lp for a wider audience. So is the Old Funeral chapter in the book of underground closed??? I honestly think so, but it was one of the few you leave a bookmark by…

Obscuro demais? Texto demais?
